A long-time entrepreneur, Fernando has created 12 companies filled with success (and a few mistakes) in different areas, such as Audiovisual Production (recording TV commercials, etc.) to a chain of three cafes in Chile. In 2009, he founded Suika, which became the largest mobile software factory with more than 120+ applications and millions of downloads in LATAM. For several years, Fernando was also the godfather and a mentor of Startup Chile and one of the leaders of the Innovation Hub of Chile (Innovation Club); working side by side with Ivan Vera, one of the leaders in innovation in Chile and leading four tech missions to Japan, France, Germany, and the US. Starting in 2016, he worked from NYC creating Zissmo, the first Secondary Market for Private Companies that operates worldwide, and as the Co-Creation Partner of Fraunhofer FIT for North America. Fernando lived in NYC for three years and then relocated to Montreal for a short time in 2019. He returned to Chile at the end of 2019 to manage the offices of NXTP for Chile, Colombia, and Peru, the second-largest Venture Capital, Latam. Currently, Fernando is a Partner and the CEO of TECNOCAL (www.tecnocal.com) and a Managing Partner for LATAM and Europe of Santo de Piedra (www.santodepiedra.com). Dr. Joann Halpern

Dr. Joann Halpern is the director of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering in New York City, a Design Thinking coach, and an adjunct professor of International Education in the Department of Applied Statistics, Social Science and Humanities at New York University. From 2009-2017 she was the founding director of the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI), which was created as a cornerstone of the German government’s initiative to internationalize science and research. In addition to teaching and administrative assignments at universities in the United States and Germany, Dr. Halpern co-founded Knowledge Transfer Beyond Boundaries, an NGO with projects in Cameroon, Nigeria, Yemen, and Antigua. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College, her M.A. from Harvard University, and her Ph.D. from New York University. She is a recipient of the Harvard University Award for Distinction in Teaching as well as scholarships and fellowships from the German Academic Exchange Service, Fulbright Association, Robert Bosch Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Halpern serves on the advisory boards of the German Center for Research and Innovation, Technical University of Dortmund, Charité Entrepreneurship Summit, University Alliance Ruhr, Research Academy Ruhr, and the External Advisory Board of the Tandon Institute for Invention, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship.
